名塩雁皮紙 Najio-ganpishi Najio Ganpi Paper

Jp En

Najio ganpi paper (made from the shrub tree called ganpi) is a traditional handicraft handed down for 400 years in a mountain village of Najio in the northern part of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Pref. The making of this paper is characterized by the technique called “Tenbiki,” in which a craftsman filters paper sitting in front of a box called “Hikibune (a ship for filtering).” In other paper producing areas, craftsmen usually keep standing and filter paper by the Nagashibiki technique to produce a large amount of paper in a short time. In the making of Najio ganpi paper, at most 100 sheets of paper can be produced even by the most skilled craftsman. Its smoothness, quiet gloss, distinctive sober texture, and resistance against sunburn and wormholes are all indispensable characteristics for wall paper and drawing paper to be used for restoration of precious cultural properties. In the present time, there are only two specialized craftsmen including Mr. Takenobu Tanino, a Living National Treasure. Nishinomiya municipal government founded “Najio Washi Gakushukan (Najio paper-making training school)” in 1989 to foster the successors of this handicraft.
