那智大滝 Nachi-ootaki The Nachi Waterfall

Jp En

The Nachi Waterfall is counted as one of Japan’s 100 Fine Waterfalls and Japan’s 100 Landscapes with Sounds. This waterfall located in the deep in the bosom of Mt. Nachi in Wakayama Pref. is said to be the No.1 great waterfall in Japan with a height of 133m, a width of 13m, and a fall basin depth of 10m. As there are 3 cracks at the top of the waterfall and the water flows down forming 3 lines, it is also called “Misuji no Taki (3-Lined Waterfall).” The Nachi Waterfall is the sacred object of Hirou Shrine, annex of Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine, so the water basin is bound by shime-nawa (braided rice straw rope) to show that it is a sacred place. This shimenawa is replaced by the hand of a shrine priest twice a year in July and December. The scene of the thin veil-like water dropping smoothly down the cliff is really overwhelming. The white water against the surrounding deep green of Nachi Primary Forest (a national Natural Treasure); it’s the one you just have to see!
