赤津焼 Akazu-yaki Akazu Ware

Jp En

Akazu Ware is said to have started about 1,000 years ago. The area is blessed with clays that cannot be found anywhere else, which has supposedly fostered a lot of excellent potters. The clay used for Akazu ware is confined to only three kinds; Motoyama Kibushi Clay, Akazu Gairome Clay, and Akazu Yamatsuchi. The glazes used in the process near the end of the completion are also confined to the seven glazes including ash glaze having been used since the Heian period (794-1192), kizeto (yellow seto), shino, each of which has its own exquisite brilliance. Going against the current of the time, when pottery was replaced by porcelain, here in Akazu area, the potters have clung tenaciously to making pottery ware, placing much value on its warm touch. The techniques have been handed down as a home-craft industry. At the present time, tea ceremony utensils, plates, and bowls are mainly produced. Akazu ware was designated as a Traditional Craft Product in 1977.
