長節湖 Cyouboshi-ko Lake Choboshi

Jp En

Lake Choboshi is a brackish lake located near Otsu fishery harbor in Toyokoro Town in the eastern part of Hokkaido. The lake has a circumference of about 5 km. It is connected to the Pacific Ocean by a narrow sand dune.

The name “Choboshi” derives from an Ainu word “chi-o-pusi-i,” meaning “the place where a river breaks open.” As is shown by its name, the end of the lake actually breaks open and the lake is included in the ocean when water rises.

The area around the lake is surrounded by forests of conifer and broadleaf trees. It is a part of Notsuke-Furen Prefectural Natural Park. The group of plants growing in the sand dune was designated as the prefecture’s Natural Monument in 1963. From spring through early fall, rugosa rose, Yezo daylily and dragon’s head (Dracocephalum argunense) come into bloom.

The walking trail and camping site are provided in the lakeside area. Visitors can enjoy various activities all though the year including lake smelt fishing and yachting on ice. Also, 45 Kannon statues including Ryogoku Holy Place of 33 Kannon are enshrined in the area around the lake.

犬江釜峡 Kenkoufu-kyo Kenkofu-kyo Canyon

Jp En

Kenkofu-kyo Canyon is a beautiful scenic spot located near the region where the Ono and Notsu rivers join in Ono, Bungo, Oita Prefecture.

Kenkofu-kyo Canyon is also known as a place cherished by Tanomura Chikuden, a famous writer of the late-Edo period, and is said to have been named by Chikuden himself.

By the shores of the Kenkofu-kyo, the mountain scenery is like a Nanga (Southern Painting). Various large rocks such as the Senganga-iwa, Meoto-iwa and Sennin-ana, along with the varying colors of trees in the four seasons, illustrate a somewhat nostalgic, yet eloquent scene.

There is also a park where camping, canoeing and other outdoor activities may be enjoyed. Different canoeing meets are held at this place, from the National Athletic Meet to various other competitions.

五ヶ所湾 Gokashowan Gokashowan Bay

Jp En

Gokashowan is a ria (submerged coastal landform), or a drowned valley by the sea. It is located within the Ise-shima National Park in Mie Prefecture. The water is surrounded by a strip of land that connects Tasosaki, Nansei-cho, Watarai-gun, Mie Prefecture and Tomenohana, Nansei-cho along the shore.

Gokashowan Bay is also called the Fuukouwan (Fuukou Bay) and is a representative example of a ria with many bays and inlets within its drowned valley. The mouth of the bay is about 2.6km wide, 22.2 km2 in area, and is 27m deep at its deepest point.

Within the bay, many types of coastal fishing take place, using fixed shore nets, gill nets and purse seine nets. Apart from coastal fishing, pearls, nori (laver), hamachi (young yellowfish) and tai (bream) are farmed here. In the Shukutaso area, deep-sea fishing for katsuo (bonito) and maguro (tuna) takes place. Additionally, many types of amusements can be enjoyed, including swimming, camping, sailing and fishing for fun.

As well as being the 'backdoor' to the beautiful scenic spots of Ise-shima, Gokashowan Bay has been, and still is, the central and most prominent spot for fisheries in all of Nansei.
