能面 般若 Noumen Hannya Noh Mask Hannya

Jp En

The Hannya mask expresses the fury and the sorrow of a jealous woman. There are three colors for this mask and each is used for different characters. The white Hannya expresses decency and humility and used for a noble lady such as Lady Aoi. The red Hannya is intermediate and used in the play “Dojoji.” And the black Hannya expresses a low character, which is rather like a demon in “Adachigahara.”

The Hannya mask has a horrible countenance with a mouth split from ear to ear. It is the aesthetic embodiment of enmity and revenge. The word “Hannya (Prajna)” means “wisdom” in Buddhism and has no connection with this mask. According to one theory, this mask was created by Priest Hannya-bo, and hereby it is called Hannya. There is also another theory stating that Hannya Singyo (the Heart Sutra) has the power to clean up an evil spirit.

The Hannya mask is used for “Aoi no Ue,” “Dojoji,” “Adachigahara,” and “Kurozuka.”
