都農神社例大祭 Tsuno-jinja-reitai-sai The Annual Festival at Tsuno Shrine

Jp En

It is said that Tsuno Shrine located in Tsuno-cho, Koyu-gun, Miyazaki Prefecture, was founded in 666 BC, when Emperor Jinmu offered a prayer for his military success and national stability at this place before he left Takachiho in Hyuga province to conquer the Yamato region. Since then the shrine has close association with the successive emperors.

The precinct together with the gravel lane to the shrine building is filled with solemn atmosphere. Surrounded by magnificent cedar tree groves, you will feel yourself purified at this shrine.

The annual festival of the shrine is held on December 4 and 5 every year. The 4th is the festival eve and the 5th is the main festival day. It features various events such as the Tsuno So-odori parade, in which a lot of people dance together in a huge circle, the Hyuga Hyottoko Dance, which is a comical dance performed by dancers with Hyottoko masks, the Shihanmato archery tournament and the dedication of kagura dance. The visitors to the shrine are treated with amazake (sweet sake wine), shochu and tonjiru (miso soup with pork and vegetables) in the precinct.

成岩神社の祭礼 Narawa-jinja-no-sairei The Festival at Narawa Shrine

Jp En

Handa Spring Dashi (Float) Festivals are held in 10 districts of Handa City in Aichi Prefecture from early in March to late in May every year. The festival at Narawa Shrine is one of such float festivals that you can’t miss.

The four floats from the four towns in the district march through the streets. The oldest one was constructed in 1846 for the Kamihanda district and was taken over to this Narawa district. The highlight of the festival is the valiant gathering of the floats at Yurakucho Crossing.

After the gathering, the floats head for the shrine, where “Ojishi-Kojisi no Mai (the dances of big and small lions)” are dedicated by the dancers from all the four towns. They are the traditional performing art passed down since the Edo period (1603-1868). They are the combination of elegant big lion dances and comical small lion dances joined by Okame and Hyottoko. “Ojishi-Kojisi no Mai” is prefecturally designated as an intangible folk cultural property.

Jp En

Takashiba Deko House is a village in Takashiba, Nishida Town, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture.

Deko house is a general name for five houses that have kept making Miharu dolls and spinning tops for many generations. The word 'deko' comes from 'deku', another word for a doll.

Takashiba Deko House makes Miharu spinning tops and red cattle dolls (one of Fukushima's symbols), as well as many talismans and good-luck charms like long-nosed goblins, droll fellows and stone-carved shrine dogs.

In the studio of Takashiba Deko House, visitors can observe working craftsmen who have inherited this 300-year-old tradition. Moreover, visitors can try painting, too.

Takashiba Deko House is a small village that preserves Fukushima's doll culture, and is a place that we should continue to preserve.
