柴又帝釈天 Shibamata-taishakuten Shibamata Taishakuten Temple
|
Shibamata-taishakuten is a Nichiren Buddhism temple in Katsushika, Tokyo. The official name is Kyoeizan Daikyo-Ji. It was inaugurated in the early-Edo period. Later, as the religious message of this sect spread out, the temple became famous. The 9th resident priest, Koteiin Nikkyo found a Nichiren Buddhist script written by the founder, Nichiren. The precepts become popular when Nikkei supported the people by preaching using the Nichiren Buddhist script during the Great Tenmei Famine. There are wooden statues carved inside and outside of the Teishaku temple. There are ten sculptures called Douhame that were selected from the Lotus Sutra. It took a few decades to be completed, beginning from the late-Taisho period. Likewise, the temple appears in contemporary literature. For example, it appeared in Soseki Natsume’s “To the Spring Equinox and Beyond”. Furthermore, after the movie release of ‘Otoko wa Tsurai yo (‘It’s Tough Being a Man’)’, it became associated with the character Tora-san or Kuruma Torajiro.
