Akasaka-juku was the 36th post town of Tokaido Road in the Edo period (1603-1868). It was a part of Goyu-juku when the post town was first established. Later in 1624, when the post stations of the Tokaido Road were all established, it became an independent post town. As it was only 2 km away from Goyu-juku, the territory in charge for the horses for official use was once partially charged by the two towns; when going up for Edo, Goyu took charge of the territory from Fujikawa to Goyu, while going down to Kyoto Akasaka took charge from Yoshida to Akasaka.

Being a relatively small post station town, the remnants of the old Tokaido Road can be seen in Akasaka-juku. The streets including the building of Ohashiya, an inn built in 1716, in this post town often appear on TV and the town is visited by a lot of tourists who want to stroll around the town.
