|
Sekkakei Gorge extends from Shoyama to Iwami in Nichinan-cho, Hino-gun Tottori Prefecture. It is located at the point where the Iwami River flows into the Hino River. The gorge is divided into two parts; North Sekkakei and South Sekkakei, which show different landscape features. The northern gorge with gentle stream, many shallow waters and deep pools gives feminine impression, while the masculine-looking southern gorge has the eroded granite cliff and many strange-shaped rocks including the most impressive 15 m tall Lion Rock, Sennin Rock, Tatami Rock, Momo (Peach) Rock, Tengu Rock and the Otora-fuchi Pool with a mysterious legend. The gorge is blessed with bountiful nature that changes from season to season such as cherry blossoms in spring, azalea in summer and crimson foliage in fall. Dollarbirds known for their distinctive calls visit dense woods of wisteria and maple trees around the gorge.
