若杉天然林 Wakasugi-tennenrin Wakasugi Native Forest

Jp En

Wakasugi Native Forest is a good place to go hiking , and is located in Nishiawakura Village, Okayama Prefecture. It is one of the natural treasures in the Chugoku Mountain District and is about 83 hectares in area and 1,200 meters high. It is designated as a Special Protected District in Hyonosen, Ushironosen and Nagisen National Parks.
The headstream of the Yoshino River, a branch of the Yoshii River, runs through the forest.  In 1986, the forest was selected as one of the ‘100 Major Forests in Japan for Forest Bathing’.
As many as 199 kinds of plants have been confirmed here including big trees like beech and maple that are over 200 years old, and it is also famous as the home of rare animals such as the Oruri, Yodaka and dormouse.
Wakasugi Toge, a mountain top, hasa superb view that many people don’t know about; you can see both the northern and southern sides of the mountain and a forest road, the Daruga Mine Line that runs for about 1,000 meters around  it.
The enveloping green, the murmur of the river and the lovely sights and sounds of insects and birds make this  forest a wonderful healing place.
