瑞巌山 円光院 Zuigan-zan Enkou-in Zuiganzan Enkoin Temple

Jp En

Enkoin Temple located in Iwakubo-cho, Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture is a temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect. Its “sango (the name of the mountain the temple is located)” is Zuiganzan. The temple is one of Kofu Gozan (5 major Rinzai temples in Kofu). It was originally founded in the town of Isawa and named Jojuin, but relocated to the present place in 1560 by Takeda Shingen with the priest Setsuzo as the founder. Later, when Shingen’s wife, Sanjo-no-kata, was buried here, the temple was renamed Enkoin after her Buddhist name.

The principal object of worship is Shaka Nyorai. In 1746, the temple buildings were burned down in a fire, and rebuilt in the Horeki era (1751-1760). The present main hall is what was reconstructed in 1977. The grave of Sanjo-no-kata lies in the inmost recess of the temple’s graveyard. The statues of Touhachi Bishamonten (the god of war with eight swords in his hands) and Shogun Jizo (Jizo that brings victory), which Shingen brought to the battle fields, are now placed at this temple and open to the public on January 3 and April 12 every year.
