Bonsai is a hobby involving appreciation of a miniature tree planted in a small pot. Through arrangement of its leaves, and attention to the shapes of its branches and roots, one becomes able to admire its beauty. Bonsai originated, not from the potted plant popular during Tang Dynasty in China, as is often thought, but from the word, “Bonkei”. Bonkei is used to describe the recreation of a landscape (mountains and rivers) using stones, sand, trees and water arranged on a tray. Bonsai culture was introduced into samurai society following the popularization of the Tea Ceremony and Noh play during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. However, it was during the Edo period that Bonsai became a popular pastime for samurai warriors. In some cases, it also became a side business, and its popularity gradually spread into commoner society. Although its aim is to recreate nature within a confined space, because object is a living plant, it requires constant care and attention. Furthermore, no two Bonsai are ever exactly alike. These elements are the key attractions of Bonsai. Bonsai requires a great deal of time and attention so it tends to be a hobby among the middle-aged or retired. However, it is becoming widely known abroad and is attracting enthusiasts in increasing numbers.
