This huge camphor tree is located in the precinct of Funahiki Shrine in Kiyotake-cho, Miyazaki-gun, Miyazaki Pref. It is estimated to be over 900 years old. It is the largest camphor tree in Miyazaki prefecture. The tree is 25 meters tall, 13.2 meters wide around the trunk and 18 meters around the base. Inside its trunk is a 9 meter high hole, which is as large as 8 tatami-mat space at the bottom. It is a designated National Natural Monument. This camphor tree is called “Hachiman Camphor” and worshipped by people as a sacred tree of Funahiki Shrine. Although the front view of the tree is like a large snail, the left side view is beautiful and impressive. Though old, it is still very imposing.
