扇山火まつり Ougiyama-himatsuri Ogiyama Fire Festival

Jp En

The Ogiyama Fire Festival is one of the 'Eight Beppu Hot-spring Festivals' held in early April in Beppu, Oita Prefecture.

During the festival, local citizens set alight the dried grass on Mt Ogiyama (792m high), until the mountainside is a blaze of flames. The glow of the burning fires light up the mountain in the night sky.

The festival started in 1976, following a proposal for a nighttime fire event as part of the hot-spring festivals. The city's fire department is enlisted to provide relevant safety precautions by setting aside fire-free areas.

The fire festival is the main event of the Eight Beppu Hot-spring Festivals, and its strength and beauty draws tourists from all over the nation.

豆田町・歴史の小径 Mamedamati・Rekishi-no-komiti An Historic Street Scene in Mameda

Jp En

Rekishi-no-komichi is an historic street scene that can be seen in the Mameda area of Hita in Oita Prefecture. During the Edo period, Hita prospered for 250 years under the direct control of the Edo Bakufu government.

Many historic buildings and remnants of the Tenryo period still exist in Hita, mostly in Mameda. This area has been declared an historic townscape in order to preserve its old buildings and place in history.

During the 'Sennen-akari' event, part of the Tenryohita Matsuri, bamboo lanterns cast a soft glow over Rekishi-no-komichi along Ogawa, creating a visionary space. A Tenryo museum is also located in the area, and lets people know of the wealth that once prevailed in Hita.

Today, a stroll through the chic area of Rekishi-no-komichi in Mameda will give the visitor a sense of the atmosphere and mood of the Edo period.

美郷ホタル Misato-hotaru The Misato Firefly

Jp En

Misato Firefly is the general term for the fireflies around Misato Yoshinogawa, in Tokushima Prefecture.

Not only these fireflies, but the whole district of Misato have been designated as a National Natural Treasure. Five kinds of firefly have been confirmed as native to this area, including the Genji Firefly (both sexes of which give off a strong light) and the Heike Firefly (which develops in larval form underwater).

When the Japanese think of a firefly, they first imagine the Genji Firefly, most representative of Japanese fireflies.

Fireflies have often appeared as a subject for haiku poems, songs and idioms.  The sight of fireflies is still an image of spring.

The imagoes of fireflies show up in Misato from the end of May to the end of June and fly in groups casting light around the river at night. At the best time, numerous males synchronise their flashes, making an extraordinary view.
