雄飛滝 Yuuhi-daki The Yuhidaki Waterfall

Jp En

Yuhidaki is a 30 meter waterfall located in Yamada Town in the northernmost part of Shuzenji Town in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It flows down in two stages; the upper stage is 20 meter tall and the lower stage is 10 meter tall. The white lines of water flowing down on the columnar joint rock surface, which is typical to this region, are very beautiful. The statue of Fudo Myoo is enshrined beside the bottom of the waterfall.

Double-flowered cherry trees that come into bloom in late April and hydrangea flowers that line the walking trail down to the basin in June offer wonderful color contrasts to the waterfall. In winter, on the other hand, the dashing flow of water freezes to create beautiful ice pillars. You will feel as if time has stopped when you see the sharp tips of ice plunging from above your head and protruding toward you.

群馬 白井宿 Gunma Shiroi-juku Shiroi-juku

Jp En

The townscape of classic Japan can be seen in the old Shiroi-juku post town in Shiroi, Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. Shiroi-juku was a prosperous post town located at the point where the Agatsuma River pours into the Tone River.

Old residences with earth store houses continue along the Shirai-zeki water channel. Many stone structures including 8 draw wells and the bell tower remind us of the town’s prosperity in the old days.

Being slightly away from National Route 17 and its bypass, the town has a little car traffic and is a good place for walking. The townscape of the good old days will make you feel at peace.

On the 4th Sunday in April every year, a lot of tourists visit this town to enjoy Shiroi-juku Yaezakura (double-blossomed cherry) Festival, in which the warrior parade goes through the town and the local products fair is held.

鳥取 船上山 Tottori senjouzan Mt. Senjozan

Jp En

Mt. Senjozan with an altitude of 600 m is a part of Daisen-Oki National Park. It is a popular scenic spot, where people can easily enjoy hiking, viewing landscapes and questing for historic sites. The mountain was worshipped as the sacred place for Shugendo (mountain practice) in the Heian period (794-1192). It is also known as the place where Emperor Go-Daigo hid himself after he had escaped from Oki Island in the late Kamakura Period (1192-1336).

The 600 m wide rocky cliff called Byobu-Iwa (Folding Screen Rock) extends along the eastern side of the mountain, beside which a waterfall flows down. There are many temples and shrines of Shugendo and historic sites in the mountain, which create distinctive atmosphere. The mountain is crowded with viewers of autumn leaves in November. Double-flowered cherry trees are in full bloom in spring in Manbon-zakura (10,000 Cherry Tress) Park at the foot of the mountain.

倶利伽羅峠 源平供養塔 Kurikaratohge Genpeikuyohtoh Kurikara Pass Genpei Memorial

Jp En

Kurikara is a pass between Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures. It is also the site of a battle fought during the famous Genpei War. At the Kurikara battlefield are various historical spots relating to the war, such as the Genpei Memorial.

In 1183, the Minamoto clan blew conches, beat drums and released a stampede of 500 cows against the Heike clan. The Heike clan were exhausted by the long march from Kyoto and their warriors were unprepared. Unable to gather themselves in the darkness and resist, the army retreated to Jigoku valley.

Later, this site was named Kagyu-no-Kei and is recorded in the 'Genpei Josuiki' chronicle. The memorial is located in Sarugababa, which is a few minutes walk toward Oyabe district from Kurikara Park.

In May, the blossom from the cherry trees planted near the memorial glow as if to soothe the spirits of the fallen warriors.
