Jp En

As it was proved by a geological survey that Mt. Gionyama (1,307 m) located in the central part of Kyushu was formed about 430 million years ago, it is called the birthplace of Kyushu Island.

The name “Gion” derives from the oratory to worship the mountain built at the foot in the ancient times by a mountain practitioner, who trained himself at Gion Kannoin Temple, a temple housed in the precinct of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto before Shinto and Buddhism were separated. People called the oratory Gion Shrine and the mountain Mt. Gion.

The mountain is one of the few places in Japan where a lot of fossils from the Silurian period of the Paleozoic Era. The fossils of marine life such as chain corals and trilobites have been excavated from the limestone layer near the summit. The mountain is also known as the treasure trove of alpine plants. The summit commands a wonderful view including Mt. Hayabinomine (Futagoyama) and Mt. Aso.

武周ヶ池 Busyuuga-ike Bushugaike Pond

Jp En

Bushugaike is located in the central part of the Niu mountain range with alignment of Rokusho-zan, Ochi-zan, etc. It has been believed and transferred by word of mouth that the pond emerged when once upon a time rocks and earth avalanched by a landslide were dammed. Surrounded with the virgin forest of beech trees, the pond is full to the brim all the year round, which creates a kind of mysterious atmosphere. The surface of the pond with the reverse images of surrounding mountains also gives you some profound and solemn impression. There has been a Dragon God (Ryujin) legend around this pond and it used to be known as a place for rainmaking rituals (amagio). In the Edo period the great rainmaking rituals were performed by the hand of a Shinto practitioner who had the ashram at Kamimaki village at the foot. Still today the rain-making ritual of “Ryujin Festival” is held every August, and the area is crowded with hundreds of mountain hikers in the rolling drums of Ryujin Daiko.
