庶野の桜 Shoya-no-sakura Cherry Blossoms in Shoya
|
Shoya Sakura Park located in Shoya in Erimo Town in south Hokkaido is one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Hokkaido. In and around the park, there are about 3,000 naturally grown cherry trees, which bloom all at once in May. Most of them are Sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii), which has large leaves and deep red blossoms.
The most magnificent is the tree named “Meoto Zakura (Husband and Wife Cherry).” Three trunks, which are twining around the thick main trunk, are combined into one trunk in the upper part of the tree. Small tree-like branches grow out of the concave portions on the trunks and they also produce flowers, from which the tree was named so. As it looks like an unfolded fan, it is also called “Ogi Zakura (Fan Cherry).”
