Saijoji Temple is a Soto-shu temple located in Daiyu-cho, Minami-Ashigara City at the eastern foot of Mt. Ashigara in Hakone, Kanagawa Pref. Enshrined are Shakamunibutsu (Sakyamuni Buddha) as Honzon (the object of respect) and Monju-Bosatsu and Fuken-Bosatsu as the subordinate deities. This historic temple is said to have been built by Ryoan Emyo Zenji in 1394. The temple is also called as Doryo-son, because there is a legend that Emyo’s disciple, Doryo, who had used prodigious strength and contributed to constructing the temple, transformed himself into a Tengu and disappeared into the mountains. The precinct spreading along the mountainside and filled with greenery creates tranquil atmosphere in the lively tourism town of Hakone. Cedar trees with over 500 years old stand along the front approach and in the precinct, forming a cedar grove called “Daiyuzan Cedar Grove.” The temple is selected as one of 50 Scenic Spots in Kanagawa Pref. The crimson foliage in autumn is beautiful. You are sure to have had your fill of tranquility.
