亀島 Gamejima Gamejima Island

Jp En

Gaemejima is the deserted island in the 100-meter offing of Takasu Coast, Fukui Prefecture. The island is located in the center of Echizen Kagakaigan Quasi National Park where strange rocks and bizarre stones created by wild waves spread all around. The name of the island comes from its shape that looks like a giant kame (turtle). Local legend has it that once upon a time Senju Kannon visited this island on the back of a giant turtle and the turtle transformed into the island. You can enjoy walking along the nature trail alongside of the coastline facing Gamejima or driving around the national park. A lot of sport-fishermen also come to this island all through the year. The coast is full of tourists who came for famous Echizen clabs in winter.
