Matsukawa Gorge extends from Hachimantai Hot Springs to Matsukawa Hot Springs in Hachimantai City, Iwate Pref. At an altitude of 500 m to 1,000 m above sea level, it is one of the most famous spots for viewing autumn leaves in the prefecture. The gorge is all covered with crimson foliage of beech trees and oak trees. The primary forest along the gorge is as large as 70 ha. This is also the habitat of over 100 species of wild birds. The magnificent waterfall seen from the bridge and the gentle sound of clear stream provide visitors with relaxation and refreshment.
