遊子水荷浦の段畑 Yusumizugaura-no-dandanbatake The Terraced fields of Yusumizugaura

Jp En

In Yusumizugaura district on the Uwakai Sea, Ehime Pref., there are terraced fields that were selected as one of “100 Farm Villages of Japan” and also as Important Cultural Landscape by the Agency of Cultural Affairs. It is said that these terraced fields were first brought under cultivation in the early Edo period when fishermen working in the Uwakai Sea started farming as their side job to support themselves. It was not until in the post-war period, however, that the fields were fully cultivated. In order to supplement food shortage, people made efforts in growing sweet potatoes and other vegetables in these terraced fields, which took far more labor than the fields on flatland. They built stonewalls to use land more effectively and save on labor. As time went by, and compared with their peak, only a part of terraced fields have now remained. As if to reach the heaven, the stone walls are overwhelming. Thinking of the effort made by the forerunners to build the walls such high and the will of people maintaining the fields, this is really a magnificent view.
