九戸城 Kunohe-jou Kunohe Castle

Jp En

Constructed by Mitsumasa Kunohe during the Meio era (1492-1501), this extensive castle consisted of the Honmaru (the main compound), Ninomaru (the second compound), and three other outer compounds of Matsunomaru, Ishizawadate, and Wakasadate. The moat dug between Ninomaru and Matsunomaru was 60 m wide at the maximum, which shows the strong fortification of the castle and the power of Kunohe clan as well. After Masazane Kunohe’s rebellion had been settled, it was reformed into an early modern styled castle by Ujisato Gamo. Nobunao Nanbu, the domain lord of Nanbu Province, moved to this castle from Sannohe Castle and renamed it Fukuoka Castle, where successive domain lords of Nanbu Clan resided until Morioka Castle was constructed. It was however scrapped in 1636. Some stonework still remains near Honmaru, which reminds you of bygone days. A lot of decapitated human bones with countless numbers of sword cuts were excavated from Ninomaru ruins, which bore witness to the fierce battles fought during the rebellion.
