山寺 五大堂 Yamadera Godaidou Yamadera Godaidou
|
Godaidou is the topmost hall of the Yamadera temple complex in Yamagata prefecture.
Yamadera is a branch temple of Enryaku-ji on Hieizan in Kyoto and was established by the priest Jikaku in 860. The official name of the temple is Mount Houshu Ryūshaku-ji.
Yamadera is famous for Matsuo Bashō's haiku:
Such stillness
The cries of the cicadas
Sink into the rocks
Because the temple was built rising up the mountainside, it is necessary for visitors to climb over 1000 stone steps. The Godaidou is placed on the precipitous cliff. The hall was rebuilt in 1714 and the five deities that protect Mt Houshu are enshrined here. Moreover, Yamadera has a Buddhist dojo where prayers can be made for peace. The scenery from the hall is magnificent and it is known as the best viewpoint from Yamadera.
