美瑛岳 Biei-dake Mt. Bieidake
|
Mt. Bieidake (2,052 m) is an active volcano located in the Tokachi mountain range, a part of the Daisetsuzan National Park in the central part of Hokkaido. It is the second highest mountain in this mountain range after the main peak Mt. Tokachi (2,077 m). The mountain is characterized by its explosion crater in the shape of a horseshoe, which affects the whole appearance of the mountain. An explosion crater is formed when the surface around the crater is blown off by a big eruption; thereby it has no volcanic cones.
To get to the summit of Mt. Bieidake, you will walk on the ridge running along the outer rim of the explosive crater. If you see this ruggedly opened crater near at hand, you can’t help but realize the tremendous power of the earth’s pulse-beat. Nevertheless, the area around the summit is a known place of alpine plants, which produce cute flowers in this rugged lava field during the blooming season, as if they were charming lip rouge fringing the volcano’s mouth.
