箱根細工 Hakone-zaiku Hakone Wood Work
|
Hakone wood work is a traditional craft made in Hakone-machi, Kanagawa Pref. The origin of this craft is dated back to the early Heian period (794-1192). During the Edo period, it thrived as a by-work of kagokaki (a palanquin bearer) and a lot of products were sold at the tea houses at the hot spring spots or along the main road. Hakone wood work is classified into two types; one is turnery such as trays and bowls made by turners and the other is cabinetry, the surfaces of which are decorated with mosaic work or marquetry. In the mosaic work, a bundle of different timbers which are joined together is sliced and pasted on the surface of wooden products. In the marquetry work, various colored wood pieces are embedded to create pictorial patters. The mountains in Hakone as well as Arashiyama in Kyoto and Mt. Daisen in Tottori Pref. are known as the places with abundant species of trees. Hakone wood work is the art of woodcraft born out of the combination of the natural environment blessed with various species of trees and the techniques of mosaic work and marquetry that are unique to this area.
