Choshi Hakkei is a general name for the eight scenic spots located in the upstream area of Ogawa Gorge Stream, which is one of the tributaries of the Bansho River in Oita Pref. The eight scenic spots comprise the Ryusho Water fall, O-buchi, Me-buchi, Tomoe-buchi, Moko-buchi, the Ryuzu Rock, Heishi-buchi, and the Choshi Waterfall. The large and small pools, the strange-shaped rock, and the waterfall appear one after another along the clear mountain stream of water. As it is very cool in summer, a lot of visitors come to get relief from heat. Bountiful nature still remains around the valley including an old growth forest of shii-trees and tabu-trees. Visitors can enjoy landscape that changes from season to season. The gorge is also known for autumn leaves. The great writer of the Meiji period, Doppo Kunikida loved this gorge and visited it to enjoy the atmosphere three times during his stay in Saiki, where he was a teacher at Tsuruya Gakkan School.
