|
Sayohime Shrine is the secondary shrine of Tajima Shrine in Karatsu City, Saga Pref. Enshrined here is the Bofu Stone derived from one of Japan’s Three Famous Legends, the tale of tragic love of Princess Sayohime. The legend has it that once upon a time Otomo no Sadehiko, who was on the warpath to Korea under the orders of the emperor Senka, fell in love with a beautiful young woman Sayohime in Fujiwara Village in Matsura district. But He had to leave Matsura to go to Korea. On the day of the departure, Sayohime shouted his name many times and waved her kimono sleeve until it was almost torn off. Then she followed his vessel to Kabeshima Island, where she became petrified because of her deep sadness. The stone is called “Bofu Stone (the stone yearning for the husband) and enshrined to console the sadness of the princess. There is a stone monument with waka poem from the Manyoshu inscribed in it, which impresses visitors deeply even today.
