ローソク岩 Rousoku-iwa Candle Rock

Candle Rock is a huge strange rock located on Osawa Coast in Sakikuwagasaki, Miyako City, Iwate Pref. The rock is 40 m high, 7 m wide in the upper part, and 3 m wide in the lower part. It was designated as a National Natural Treasure in 1939. As it looks like a huge candle, it is called “Candle Rock.” Especially when the sun shines just above the rock, it looks like a real candle burning at the sea. A part of igneous rock mass burst through the surrounding igneous rock layer and formed this rare rock, on which the whole dike is exposed and observed. The white color of the rock surface is enhanced by its surrounding green of pine trees. It is very popular seeing spot and there are many legends about this rock.
