Tanzan shrine, located in Mt. Tonomine, Sakurai City, Nara Pref. enshrines Fujiwara no Kamatari, the central figure in the Taika Reforms (646). It is said that the shrine originates in a wooden 13-story pagoda (Important Cultural Property) built by Kamatari’s eldest son to burry his father’s bones, which were originally buried in Mt. Aiyama in Settsu Province (presently Osaka Pref.). The name of the shrine, “Tanzan (a mountain to talk)” comes from Mt. Katarai, where Prince Nakano Oe and Kamatari talked over the plan to assassin Soga no Iruka. In the precinct stand beautiful vermillion buildings including the Main Gate, the Main Hall, and the Gonden (associate building). It is also known as the place to enjoy autumn leaves. A lot of tourists visit to see the pagoda surrounded with crimson foliage in fall. In spring and fall every year, Kemari (ancient football game) Festival is held. The festival is originated in a historical story that Kamatari first met Prince Nakano Oe at a football tournament held at Hokoji Temple in Nara.
