那谷寺 Nata-dera Natadera Temple
|
Natadera Temple, established by a Buddhist priest Taicho in the early Nara period, is the Shingon-shu Bekkaku Honzan (extra-status cathedral). Located at the foot of Mt. Hakusan, the temple is surrounded by rocky mountains and beautiful flowers. In the middle of the Heian period, when Emperor Kazan visited the temple in pilgrimage, he said that all of “the thirty-three sacred places of Kannon” were on this mountain. Then he is said to have taken both of the first character from the first place of the thirty-three places of the western country, Nachi-zan, and the first character of the thirty-third place, Tanigumi-san, and have christened Natadera. Later, the power of Natadera was weakened gradually and the temple had come to ruin. In the Edo period, Toshitsune Maeda, the third domain lord of Kaga Province, strived to reconstruct the temple and built the inner shrine in the rocky caves as well as the outer shrine, the Chinese-style arched gate, the 3-story pagoda, incense-burning pavillion, the bell tower and the residence, employing the expert artisan Yamagami Zenemon and other carpenters. In 1941, all the buildings which had been connected with Lord Toshitsune were designated as national treasures (presently National Important Cultural Properties), by which all the buildings have been well preserved in their original conditions to the present day.
