Shokaikyo is a movable iron bridge that spans the Chikugo River and is located between the towns of Oukawa in Fukuoka Prefecture and Modoromi in Saga, Saga Prefecture. A red tower soars from the surrounding landscape. This beautiful tower, which is part of the bridge, is known as the landmark of the area and is one of the few remaining movable bridges of its kind today, making it an important monument. Shokaikyo was built in 1935 (Showa 10) for the Saga Line of the former National Railway. It has a span of 507 meters, and is about 30 meters high in the center, and the two towers rising to a height of 23 meters. It is also known as one of the largest movable bridges in Japan. Once, it was even called the largest movable bridge in Asia. Unfortunately, the National Railways Saga Line closed in 1987. Now it has a recreation trail and the movable center part still functions. Shokaikyo has been designated an important cultural property, being the oldest existing movable bridge today.
