滋賀 西明寺 Siga Saimyou-ji Saimyoji Temple of Shiga
|
Saimyoji Temple located at Kora-cho-Ikedera in Shiga Pref. is one of the three distinguished Tendai temples on the eastside of Lake Biwa (Koto-Sanzan). The principal image of Buddha is Yakushi-Nyorai (Healing Buddha). It is also called “Ike-dera (Pond Temple)” because there is a legend that once upon a time Yakushi-Nyorai appeared from the pond in the precinct. The temple is said to have been established by the priest Sanshu by order of Emperor Ninmyo in 834. In the Kamakura period (1192-1333) the temple was at its most flourished time and there were 17 buildings in the precinct. It was destroyed by fire and desolated during the warring time but restored by Yukan Mochizuki in the middle of Edo period. The Chisen-kaiyushiki garden (wet garden with promenade) of Horai-Garden is famous for “Fudan-zakura (eternal cherry tree),” which continues blooming from September to May. Then visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms and autumn leaves at the same time. The main hall and the three-story pagoda are built in traditional Japanese style without using any nails and both are designated as National Treasures.
