久里双水古墳 Kurisouzui-kohun Kurisouzui Kofun
|
Kurisouzui Kofun is designated as a historical site by Karatsu City, Saga Pref. This kofun (tomb) was discovered in 1981 and confirmed as one of the oldest kofuns in Japan. It is assumed that the tomb was constructed in 3rd century A.D. This is a zenpo-koen-fun (a keyhole shape tomb), which is 108.5 meters in the total length, 62.2 meters in the diameter of the rectangular part, and 42.8 meters in the width of the circular part. In comparison with its size, the number of excavated articles was small; however, the vertical stone chamber and burial goods including mirrors provide valuable historical data to know the social situations in the period ruled under Yamatai Kingdom. The vertical stone chamber is 2.5 meters long and 0.9 meters wide. A U-shaped clay floor indicates the existence of a boat-shaped wooden coffin. Hirabuchi-banryukyo (a flat-framed mirror with a toreutic dragon), daggers, and glass cylindrical jewels were excavated from the stone chamber.
