七ツ釜 Nanatsugama The Nanatsugama Caves
|
On the basaltic cliffside of Higashi Matsuura Peninsula, Saga Pref. there are seven sea-eroded caves created by the rough waves of the Genkaki-Nada Sea. The caves look like kilns, so they are called “Nanatsugama (seven kilns).” It is designated as a national natural monument. The frontage and the height of the biggest cave is 5 meters respectively and its depth is 110 meters. Fresh green of the grassland on the caves contrasts finely with the white bubbles created by the waves pounding against the rocks. If you walk along the walkway built in the grassland, you can command a fine view of prismatic jointing of basalt and the scenic Matsuura Peninsula. By taking a tour boat, you can closely look at the inside of the caves.
