御代焼 Mijiro-yaki Mijiro ware

Jp En

At Mijiro, near the Hii River in the city of Izumo, in Shimane Prefecture, there is much good-quality kaolin from Kamocho-Sandai.
In the Edo period, this kaolin was used by the Matsue clan as Oyame-tsuchi for Rakuzan ware or Fujina ware.  But in the 13th year of the Tenpo period, Gosuke, a craftsman of Fujimi ware, set up a kiln with the support of the Matsue clan; this is the origin of Mijiro ware. Many kinds of Sandai kaolin were combined to make Mijiro ware, which is a warm and homely pottery. The biggest fascination are the colorful pictures painted on the pottery, as well as the fact that the pottery is fired at least three times, which takes exceptional skill.
Now, the craftsmen vigorously compose mainly tea ware and vases, jars, decorative plates and everyday pottery.
In the 57th year of the Showa period, Mijiro ware was designated as a Shimane Traditional Local Craft.
