柿原の堰 Kakihara-no-seki Kakihara Weir

Jp En

A weir of the Yoshino River dating back 90 years, the Kakihara Weir is located between Awa City and Yochino-cho, both in Tokushima Prefecture. It was completed in 1907 as a temporary weir for agricultural use, but was soon extended in 1922 to its current size of 860 meters in length. Even now it acts as abuffer, adjusting the flow of the wide Yoshino River. Watching the brimming water from the Yoshino River splash down the weir while spraying a fine mist above the surface is a grand sight. Japanese trout is forbidden game in the area, but the ban is lifted once a year on June 1st, when you can see people practicing the traditional korogashi fishing technique while riding on kanndori boats, both of which are unique to the Yoshino River. Famous tourist locations such as the Great Camphor Tree of Annai Shrine and the Ichijou Submerged Bridge can be foundin the vicinity. With the majestic, panoramic view of the Koutsu Mountain in the background, and the murmur of the deep indigo colored water from the Yoshino River caressing one’s ears, Kakihara weir is a haven where one can feel the harmony of nature and history.
