観世音寺 Kanzeonji Kanzeonji Temple

Kanzeonji Temple located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Pref. is a temple with a long and distinguished history. It is referred to in the Nihon Shoki (the Chronicles of Japan). The temple was established in 746 by the emperor Tenchi to pray for the repose of his mother, the ex-empress Seimei’s soul. It took 80 years to complete the construction. At the time of the establishment, the temple consisted of seven halls and functioned as the key of all the temples in Kyushu area. In 756, Kaidanin (ordination hall) was built in the precinct. The bell of the temple is said to be the oldest bell of the country and is designated as a National Treasure and the boom of the bell is selected as one of Japan’s 100 Fine Sounds. In back of the bell tower is Kanzeonji Houzou (Treasury), where 13 images of Buddha made from the Heian period to the Kamakura period are worshipped. All the images are designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
