花巻城 Hanamaki-jou Hanamaki Castle
|
Constructed by Hienuki clan in 1530, Hanamaki Castle was later modified by Hidechika Kita, the chief retainer of Nanbu clan, and renamed Hanamaki Castle in 1591. This flatland castle was located on the eastern salient part of the hill that was formed along the Kitakami River. The castle consisted of Honmaru (the main compound), Ninomaru (the second compound), and Sannomaru (the third compound). Honmaru had no donjon. Ninomaru was used as a residence of county administrators, which was equipped with a stable and a storehouse. Sannomaru was the housing for senior retainers. The back gate (karamete-mon) of the castle called “Enjoji-mon” used to be the main gate of Futago Castle, which was the base of Waga clan, but it was removed to this place and reconstructed in 1932. At the present the gate can be seen in the precinct of Toyagasaki Shrine. Hanamaki Castle had been resided by successive county administrators of Nanbu clan until the Meiji era. In 1873 it was disposed of by the government and later demolished. The castle ruins is now coordinated as Toyagasaki Park. In 1995 the west gate of Honmaru was restored.
