武雄の大楠 Takeono-oogusu The Big Camphor Tree in Takeo

Jp En

This camphor tree is in back of Takeo Shrine in Takeo City, Saga Pref. The 3000-year-old tree is the 6th biggest tree in Japan. It stands solemnly as if it were the king of this luxuriant forest. There is a large hollow with an area of about 16 square meters at the bottom of the tree; inside which is a small shrine and it is worshipped by the local people still now. The branches grow in all directions and the gigantic roots look as if they were intertangled with the mother earth. To see this glorious tree, we feel that the spirit of a tree might reside in it. It gives you a very mysterious impression. This big camphor tree was designated as a city’s Protected Species in 1970.
