五稜郭 Goryoukaku Goryoukaku Fortress

Jp En

Goryoukaku is a late-Edo period fortress located in Hakodate, Hokkaido. The star-shaped fortress is also known as Kameda Yakusho Dorui.

Goryoukaku was constructed on the orders of the Tokugawa Shogunate to provide an administrative center and place for defense following the opening of Hakodate as a port with the declaration of the Convention of Kanagawa.

The fortress is designed in a Western style, which was a standard form for war purposes. It was preliminarily made as a fortress against foreign threats, although it was later transformed into a government institution.

In 1922, the fortress was designated as a national ruin and in 1952 it was chosen as a special national ruin. Nowadays it is known as a beauty spot for cherry blossom.

矢掛本陣 Yakage-honjin Yakage Honjin

Jp En

Honjin are the inns located at post stations on the old highways. During the Edo period, they provided accommodation to traveling daimyo, kuge and officers, who were obliged as part of the Sankin Kotai system to live part of the year in Edo, the Shogun's capital.

Yakage is a town built along the Odagawa river. Major roads passed through Yakage from ancient times. In the Edo period, the town prospered as the 18th post station of the Sanyo Highway. It is the only place where the original honjin (of the Ishi family) and the original sub-honjin (of the Takakusa family) are both designated as important national cultural assets. The honjin mansion still fronts some 36m along the road, and has land 90m long with an area of 3,200m2. Dozens of buildings still stand today, hardly changed from Edo times, and provide representative examples of 'tsuma-iri' and 'hira-iri' architecture, as well as 'oni-gawara' roof tiles and 'shira-kabe' and 'namako-kabe' walling.

Every November, the town holds a festival with a daimyo procession and enjoyably recreates the atmosphere of the Edo period.

天領ひたおひなまつり Tenryouhita-ohinamaturi Tenryohita Doll's Festival

Jp En

The Tenryohita Doll's Festival takes place each year on 3 March, Girls' Day, in Hita-shi, Oita Prefecture. At this time, dolls and doll-making tools are displayed in about 20 old family houses and reference libraries throughout the town.

During the Edo period, an early spring Ohinasama (doll) festival spread among the general public along with a rise in urban prosperity. This festival became a traditional Japanese event to wish for the health, wholesomeness and happiness of girls. At this time, because Hita was directly governed by the Edo Bakufu, a governor's residence (daikansho) was built. As merchants became wealthier, the Tenryohita became greater and thrived to such an extent that it was called the greatest festival of Kyushu.

The dolls and doll-making tools handed down from generation to generation from the old families of the Edo and Meiji periods, astound us with their extravagance and splendor. The elegant, lustrous and graceful features of the dolls, along with their majestic kimonos and gracious figures, reflect the financial power the wealthy merchants possessed, and the prosperous, cultivated lives they led.
