In the 35th year of the Meiji period (1902), some of the first pioneers to  Hokkaido built a small shrine as their spiritual refuge, on the east bankof the Tomu River.  The Furano Shrine was dedicated to the ancestral god Ou-Kunitama-shin, the god of governance Taiko-kishin, and the god of wisdom Sukunabikona. Five years later, in the 40th year of the Meiji period (1907), the shrine was moved to its present position. In the 8th year of the Taisho period (1919), the site  became a villageshrine and in the 15th year of the Taisho period (1940), it was elevated to a  provincial-shrine. After the Second World War, the local Ujiko committee organized  the maintenance of the shrine, building new facilities and renovating old ones.The 14th year of the Heisei period (2002) was the 100th anniversary of the shrine, which was commemoratied  with special events and further renovation ofthe shrine facilities. The most important annual ritual, is Shinko, which is marked by  Furano Yaei drumsand a Furano lion dance.
