Shurei no Mon is the second main gate of Shuri Castle, where you can command a bird’s-eye view of the city of Naha. It was built in the 16th century (1527?1555) by Sho Sei, the fourth king of the second Sho dynasty. It was designated as a National treasure in 1933, but burnt down in the Battle of Okinawa. The gate was reconstructed in 1958 and repaired in 1992. Now it has recovered the beautiful color of Chinese vermillion that represents the dignity of Ryukyu dynasty. It is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Okinawa. The ladies in the traditional Ryukyu costume welcome the tourists beside the gate. The must-see sight is the gate which is lit up at night. It was designated a cultural property by Okinawa Prefecture in 1972.
