角間木谷川 Kakumagi-tanigawa Kakumagi Gorge

Kakumagi Gorge is a 4 km clear water gorge running through Katsuragi-cho, Ito-gun, Wakayama Pref. The water is so clear that the gorge is a habitat of Iwana and Yamame. The water is used not only for irrigation but for beverage in the neighboring area.
The town is known for the birth place of Japanese horse radish cultivation in Kansai Region, for not only the quality but also the temperature and amount of the water in this gorge are suitable for it. Its cultivation is actively done even today. One of the specialty products of this area is the horse radish sushi, which is the sushi with salted mackerel, white fish or eel wrapped with a leaf of horse radish. Eaten with a leaf, it is not too hot but refreshing.
