Service counters are seen in hotels and stores. All kinds of services and feelings are exchanged back and forth by people who stand face to face over a counter. The dim, yet rich color of the lacquer of this counter top reflects on to the expressions of the people who surround it. Urushi (Japanese Lacquer: sap from the urushi tree) clarifies after it is purified and refined. By adding color pigments, it becomes a distinctly colored urushi. Urushi is very versatile and can be applied to all kinds of materials, refashioning the surface of the material in a myriad of ways. The countertops above were built using a special technique called ‘Nuno-bari urushi-nuri’ (cloth-covered lacquer). By covering the counter surface with cloth, the counter is fortified and gains its own unusual and innovative appearance. The counter is then lacquered and dried, and the process repeated again. These countertops require the skill of an artisan and take two months to make , but they definitely have a strong presence and harmonize exquisitely with modern interiors.
