The area near Bessho Onsen Hot Spring in Nagano Pref. is called “Kamakura of Nagano,” because there area many old and distinguished temples including Anrakuji Temple, Jorakuji Temple, Daihoji Temple, and Chuzenji Temple. Zensanji Temple is also one of such temples. It is said that this temple was originally established by Kobo Daishi, Kukai as one of his training ashrams in 812. Later in the Muromachi period, the temple was relocated to the present place. The three-storied pagoda is called “Uncompleted Pagoda,” because it has no windows, exposed verandas, nor railings. However, it looks much stabilized and in perfect harmony as a whole. The pagoda towers solemnly behind the large ginkgo tree, giving the impression of sublimity. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The temple is also known for the place to enjoy the night view of Shiotadaira town and the various flowers of the seasons.
