文蔵の滝 Bunzou-no-taki The Bunzonotaki Waterfall

Jp En

The Bunzonotaki Waterfall located in the upstream of the Shijuhasse river in Katsuragi-cho, Wakayama Pref. is a straight cataract with a height of 15 m. As the waterfall is in the back of the narrow dogleg-shaped gorge with steep cliffs on both sides, you can’t have a full view unless you go into the end of the cove. The waterfall looked up from the bottom of the narrow cove is superb and overwhelming.
It is said that the priest Bunkaku trained himself standing under the waterfall at the end of the Heian period (794-1192), since when it has been used as the training place for mountain practitioners. Even today a lot of people come to stand under the waterfall.
It is counted as one of 100 Fine Water in Kinokuni and its clear water relieves visitors’ thirst.
