高知 轟の滝 Kouchi Todorokinotaki The Todoroki Waterfall
|
The Todoroki Waterfall is on the Hibihara River, a tributary of the Mononobe River, which runs through the eastern part of Kochi Prefecture and flows into the Pacific Ocean. It is counted as one of Japan’s 100 Fine Waterfalls. The waterfall flows down a height of 83 m in three stages. The uppermost basin forms a pit fall with a diameter of 15 m. As it is located at the north foot of Mt. Gozaisho (1079 m), which is known for Heike refugee legends, there is also a tragic story pertaining to Princess Tamaori of the Heike clan handed down about its mysterious blue basin.
Surrounded with primary forests of deciduous trees including Japanese maple trees, the area around the waterfall is a popular scenic spot. White splashes of the waterfall in contrast to green leaves from spring through summer and red color of the leaves in fall are very beautiful.
There is a camping site named Todoroki-no-taki Camping Site near the waterfall.
