Jp En

Iro Shrine located in Irozaki, Minami Izu-cho, Shizuoka Pref. is a historic shrine with a unique structure. The enshrined deity is Iware no Mikoto, the guardian of the sea traffic. It was founded in 701, and the present simple hall was constructed in 1901. The shrine stands in the recessed part of the cliff at the tip of Irozaki Peninsula, further than the lighthouse. The post that sustains the shrine floor is a mast of Sengoku-bune (junks with a capacity for a thousand koku of rice). A part of the floor is made of glass to show this post (11 long and 76 cm square). How it was carried to this place is one of the seven mysteries in Izu Peninsula. From the shrine, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean.
