備後安国寺 Bingo-ankoku-ji Bingo Ankokuji Temple
|
Bingo Ankokuji Temple is said to have been founded in 1270 by the priest Gukoku. The temple was originally named Kinpoji, but later in the Nanbokucho period (1336-1392), Ashikaga Takauji changed the name to Ankokuji. Shakado Hall and the wooden statues of Amida Nyorai Triad and the wooden sitting statue of Priest Hoto Kokushi hosed in the hall are designated National Important Cultural Properties.
In the Amida Nyorai Triad, Amida Nyorai sits in the center and is surrounded by Kannon Bosatsu on the right and Shisei Bosatsu on the left. It is the Ikkō Sanzon-butsu (meaning “single-light triad”) because all three figures are enveloped inside one halo. It is a life-size statue, which gives stately and holy impression.
The statue of Hoto Kokushi is the oldest “Chinzo (the "true image statue)” and at the same time the oldest “Juzo (a portrait made while one is still alive)” in Japan. It was made in 1275, when Hoto Kokushi was 69 years old.
The temple is also famous as the cherry blossom viewing spot. In April, a lot of people come to enjoy the color of spring.
