法輪寺 Hourin-ji Horinji Temple
|
Horinji Temple, located in Mii Village in the northern end of Ikaruga Town, Nara Pref. is associated with Prince Shotoku. The temple is said to have been founded by Prince Yamashiro no Oe, Prince Shotoku’s eldest son, and Prince Yugi in 622 to pray for Prince Shotoku’s recovery from illness. In the precinct stands the Three-story Pagoda, which is one of the Three Fine Pagodas in Ikaruga Town. The original pagoda was burned down by a fire caused by lightning in 1944 and was rebuilt later in 1975, following the original beautiful style. The temple is also known for the impressive statues of Buddha in Asuka style such as Yakushi-Nyorai and Kokuzo-Bosatsu. The Kondo hall and the Three-story Pagoda stand in a line from east to west with the Main Hall in the central depth, an arrangement referred to as “Horyuji style.” Although the scale of the temple is two-thirds of that of Horyuji Temple, it is suggested from the excavated roof tiles that this temple was built earlier than Horyuji Temple.
